How to load your Microsoft Windows licensed disk into your virtual machine

These instructions work for both Windows XP and 7

Step 1:

Load VirtualBox from your main menu in your Ubuntu Version

Step 2:

Load your Microsoft Licensed Windows Operating System disk into your CD/DVD Drive.
Please give the disk time to load before you continue to the next step below

Step 3:

Now you can click on the top green right arrow button to load your Windows VM.

Step 4:

You will see that Virtualbox has loaded your Microsoft Licensed Windows version disk and is loading the installer.
Please note that this example is for Windows 7 but it could be XP if that is what you want to install. The process
of installing either is the same.

Step 5:

Simply finish installing your Windows operating system as a normal installation.
After it is fully installed you will need to install the Oracle Guest Additions which is explained below:

Please eject your Windows operating system disk from your CD/DVD disk drive.

Your Windows OS disk has to be removed in order to install the Oracle Guest Additions below.

Simply right click the silver DVD icon on your Desktop and select "Eject". Your Windows DVD will be ejected from the drive. Please remove it and store it safely.

IMPORTANT NOTE!

Turn off the Windows restore function in the Windows Control Center now! Otherwise your virtual machine will more than double in size, which will slow down the Robolinux VM backup and restore functions. Please click on the FAQ below if you need help with turning off the Restore Point in Windows.

Now you can install the "VirtualBox Guest Additions"

Your Windows OS needs this software in order to function properly. This automaticallly installs all your Windows drivers in less than a minute.

This is a typical Windows program installation so you will be clicking once on several screens to finish the installation. Do not be intimidated by the number of screens and clicks. There is nothing complicated and it takes less than one minute to do. This installation example is done in Windows 7, but also has the same screens in XP.

Step 1:

Start Windows in VirtualBox as explained above and click on the top menu option "Devices" and click on "Insert Guest Additions CD image"
Please note you do NOT have to insert any CD. The CD image is actually a file and is already included with Oracle VirtualBox 4.3.6 & above versions.

ATTENTION XP Users: The screens you see will be a different color but the same dialogue boxes
will ask you the same easy questions.

Step 2:

Click on "RunVBoxWindowsAdditions.exe"

Please note if the Oracle Guest Additions do not load within a few minutes then check to make sure that VirtualBox is set to use the "Host Drive".

Simply right click the tiny silver DVD icon on the bottom right side of the VM screen and select "Host Drive".

Step 3:

Click on "Yes".

Step 4:

Click on "Next".

Step 5:

Click on "Next".

Step 6:

Click on "Install".

Step 7:

Click on "Install".

Step 8:

Click on "Install".

Step 9:

Click on "Finish" and be sure to reboot.

Congratulations You're done!
